How this calculator works

The traditional-photography side is built from the same itemized cost model as our photoshoot cost calculator: a photographer day rate that varies by shoot type, studio rental or location fees, model fees with a usage-rights multiplier, hair and makeup, and per-image retouching. All rates are typical 2026 US rates, scaled by your region and city, and multiplied by how many shoots you run per year. Shoot days are derived from your SKU count (roughly 40 flat-lay looks, 20 on-model looks, or 10 editorial looks per day), and your total image volume assumes three final shots per SKU, because a real product page needs a front, back, and detail shot, not one photo.

The AI side uses Flash Flamingo's actual published pricing. The calculator spreads your annual image volume across the year, then picks the plan that fits the resulting monthly volume: Starter ($29/month, 20 images), Studio ($79/month, 60 images), Brand ($179/month, 150 images), or Atelier ($399/month, 350 images). It adds $1.50 per extra image if you exceed the plan's allowance. There are no hidden costs on the AI side: every plan includes 2K output, commercial usage rights, and up to 12 cohesive images per shoot, with no separate charges for models, studios, or retouching.

One thing the comparison leaves out is your time. A traditional shoot also costs days of coordination: booking the photographer and studio, casting models, shipping samples, and waiting two to four weeks for the final files. An AI photoshoot produces finished images in about five minutes. We don't put a dollar figure on that difference because it varies by team, but for most small brands it is the larger saving.

It works the other way round too: AI photography is not the right tool for every job. Flagship campaigns built around a physical location, shoots with a signed ambassador, or imagery where the art direction is the product still justify a traditional shoot. The savings shown here apply to the imagery that makes up most of a fashion brand's photography budget: ecommerce catalog shots and lookbooks. Frequently asked questions

Most fashion brands save 80–95% per image compared to traditional photography. A traditional ecommerce shoot averages around $20 per finished picture once you include the photographer, studio, model, and retouching, while AI-generated photoshoots with Flash Flamingo start at $29/month for 20 images, which is roughly $1.50 per image. For a brand producing 100 images a month, that is a difference of over $1,800 every month.
Everything. A Flash Flamingo subscription covers the full production: AI model selection from a library of 50+ diverse models, styled photography settings, up to 12 cohesive images per shoot, 2K output quality, and full commercial usage rights. There are no separate fees for studio time, model licensing, hair and makeup, or retouching. The price you see is the full cost per image.
Traditional photography still wins for flagship brand campaigns built around a specific physical location or event, shoots featuring a signed celebrity or brand ambassador, and products whose selling point is texture you want captured under studio lighting with custom art direction. Many brands run a hybrid model: AI for the ecommerce catalog and lookbooks, traditional shoots once or twice a year for hero campaigns.
